Scope: IBM has announced a Statement of Direction to retire the z/OS Communications Server SMTPD e-mail Server effective with all z/OS releases subsequent to IBM z/OS V2R2.
Effective Date: 09/30/2017 Group Name: Mainframe Network Software Affected Locations: Global - All mainframe computers running IBM z/OS at release levels higher than z/OS V2R2.
Summary: The SMTPD E-mail Server is a full function server that both sends and receives e-mail on IBM z/OS mainframe computers. SMTPD has been superseded by the CSSMTP Client. CSSMTP will continue to send e-mail from the mainframe to remote e-mail servers.
CSSMTP doesn’t support inbound e-mail on z/OS Mainframe computers. Any application utilizing the SMTPD Server and relying on inbound e-mail must be converted to a different solution prior to the implementation of any z/OS release above z/OS V2R2 or the application will cease to function.
Due to contractual obligations it will not be possible to delay the implementation of future releases of z/OS software.
Justification: IBM Statement of Direction. The z/OS Communications Server SMTPD server is obsolete and is being permanently retired.
Benefits to Users: CSSMTP was a complete re-engineering of e-mail on z/OS. In IBM Benchmarks CSSMTP was faster sending emails while using half the CPU of SMTPD, supports newer mail standards, supports IPv6 and AT-TLS and uses system translation services.
Details: Where to find Additional Information: IBM Hardware Announcement 114-009, dated February 24, 2014, The Simple Mail Transport Protocol Network Job Entry (SMTPD NJE) Mail Gateway and Sendmail transports are planned to be removed from z/OS. IBM now plans for z/OS V2.2 to be the last release to include these functions.
