Scope: Auburn Hills SMC Project # AHBI10332 Charlotte SMC Project # CLBI10282 Plano SMC Project # PLBI10736 Sacramento SMC Project # SABI10106 Tulsa SMC Project # RDI-13777 - CDC RDI 13778 - Mingo
Effective Date: 03/25/2011 Group Name: Mainframe Storage Tape Affected Locations: All United States SMCs (Auburn, Charlotte, Plano, Sacramento, and Tulsa)
Summary: Service Delivery support at all HP US Based SMCs usage of Oracle Supported 3480(18-track) and 3490(36-track) physical tape hardware and tape media will end. Hardware supported by Oracle is effective on 03/31/2012!! All HP US Based SMCs will be installing the Bus-Tech MDL to replace the EOL/EOS Oracle Hardware for Mainframe Tape Processing.
Justification: All US Based SMCs will be converting to the Bus-Tech MDL (Mainframe Data Library) solution. Sites using Oracle or IBM Tape Technology will be required to migrate to the Bus-Tech Solution. End of Life for current Tape Hardware at US Based SMCs. 18-track media and 36-track is becoming difficult or impossible to acquire.
Benefits to Users: Users will be directed to newer tape hardware/media technology transparently. In some cases, a minimal change may be required.
Benefits include: * Improved end-user service based upon possible media failure (e.g. broken physical tapes). * Reduced i/o error rate * Electronic data vaulting (Replication) to an off-site location. (Future Enhancement) * Provides alternative for EOL hardware * Reduced mount times for data that currently resides on Physical Tape
Details: All US Based SMCs sites will be Installing new Hardware Tape Technology. It will be the Bus-Tech MDL (Mainframe Disk Library) running the Virtuent tape-on-disk Software with HP EVA (Enterprise Virtual Array) disk storage systems. There are 2 phases to this project. Phase I is to direct all non-offsite data to the new Bus-Tech MDL devices and in Phase II, the off-site data will be addressed. All users/clients of physical 3490 36-track tape technology and media within HPES US SMCs will need to migrate to newer tape technology by 03/31/2012. Clients using physical 18trk / 36 track technology for shipper tapes will need to migrate off this media type as well. As the leveraged data centers will no longer support these tape devices, clients must convert to the recommendation made by MVS Support (Secure FTP – questions can be directed to MVS Support for this solution). Should the clients be unable to migrate to the newer technology, they may find it necessary to a engage a third party to provide an acceptable format.
