Scope: The Dovetail ATOOLS Scripts product will be removed from all systems where it is currently installed. Dovetail ATOOLS Scripts provides Unix shell scripts (rexxes) that do an automatic translation of files when editing an ASCII file. This product is no longer needed on the system as native functions within z/OS provide this functionality without any intervention by the user.
Effective Date: The removal of the product from systems where it is currently installed will begin in March 2012.

Summary: The Dovetail ATOOLS Scripts product is no longer needed on the system as its functionality is built into z/OS. TSO and OMVS oedit behavior has changed in z/OS 1.11 regarding the editing of ascii files. Whereas in the past, users entered the oedit session and typed "SOURCE ASCII", this is no longer allowed. The manual should reflect that ascii files should be tagged as ISO8859-1 so that oedit will automatically translate the file. The use of the iconv command within the z/OS unix shell is no longer needed for files tagged as ASCII text. Native z/OS will automatically translate files tagged as ASCII text to EBCDIC before editing and back again when done.
Justification: Product is no longer needed on any of the systems where it currently is installed.
Benefits to Users: Users will automatically use functions built into the z/OS operations system that have full vendor support.
Details: Product will be scheduled to be removed from each system where it is currently installed. A change record will be created that will detail the date scheduled for removal from each system where currently installed. Product is currently installed on the following systems:
