Summary: This communication details planning information required by application Database Administrator (DBAs), application Information Analysts (IAs), and System Software IAs for the migration to DB2 Version 10. The Release section indicates the improvements in DB2 V10 in performance and availability, security and auditing, SQL additions, consistency and standardization among the DB2 family of products, large object support, and Pure XML implementation. DB2 V10 is a skip level release. You can migrate from either DB2 V8 NFM or DB2 V9 NFM. The Details section will refer to changes required for Version 10 when migrating from DB2 V9 New Function Mode (NFM). To get information for release incompatibilities and migration considerations migrating from DB2 V8 NFM, please review the previously published DB2 V9 Usercomm, which has been attached.
Justification: Proper preparation of the DB2 Version 8 or DB2 Version 9 NFM environment is necessary for a successful migration to DB2 Version 10. Preparation will include ensuring proper software release levels of third-party products used to manage these. Of special note to DBA’s, DB2 V10 no longer supports Private Protocol, DBRM binds for PLANS, PLAN_TABLES in an incompatible release level. All of these items must be mitigated prior to migration to DB2 V10, for a successful migration and implementation to occur. For sites that are migrating from DB2 V8 NFM, special consideration must be paid to additional items that were referenced in the DB2 V9 USERCOMM (attached to this document).
Benefits to Users: Meeting all required prerequisites reduces the client impact. Some changes may present unexpected or unwanted results. DB2 V10 release provides improvements in SQL and applications, utilities, performance, and availability. Please review each of the details below and determine how the changes may benefit your application and DB2 subsystem.
Details: See the attachments for requirements when migrating from DB2 V9 NFM or DB2 V8 NFM.
