Scope: Enterprise Cobol on the TOPS Markets MF systems – CLIPC1P(PRD2/DEV1) will be upgraded from v4.1 to the currently supported v4.2

Effective Date: 10/07/12

Group Name: National MVS SOFTWARE support team

Affected Locations: TOPS Markets - CLIPC1P(PRD2/DEV1).

Summary: Enterprise Cobol will be upgraded from v4.1 to v4.2 on the TOPS Markets MF systems – CLIPC1P(PRD2/DEV1).

Justification: To maintain current vendor supported software levels and to take advantage of new features and enhancements.

Benefits to Users: Enterprise COBOL for z/OS V4.2 delivers:

• Further enhancements to XML parsing using the z/OS XML System Services parser
- Users can now parse XML documents with validation against an XML schema, using the VALIDATING phrase of the XML PARSE statement.
- Performance is improved for nonvalidating parsing.
- Character processing is enhanced for any XML document that contains a reference to a character that is not included in the single-byte EBCDIC code page of the document.

• A new compiler option, BLOCK0, lets programs take advantage of system-determined block size for QSAM output files.
- When a program is compiled using the BLOCK0 compiler option, an implicit BLOCK CONTAINS 0 clause is activated for all eligible QSAM files in the program, which can result in enhanced processing speed and minimized storage requirements for output files.

• The underscore character (_) is now supported in user-defined words such as data-names and program-names. Underscores are also supported in the literal form of program-names.

• If you use the integrated CICS translator, the compiler listing will now show the CICS options that are in effect.

• Enterprise COBOL applications that use object-oriented syntax for Java interoperability are now supported with Java 5 and Java 6 in addition to the Java SDK 1.4.2.

Details: CLIPC1P will receive the upgrade in line with normal change control procedures. RFC 100-03-1029037 documents this upgrade request and will occur with the IPL of CLIPC1P.
