Scope: All North American SMCs Issue Date: 01/15/2016 Effective Date: 01/15/2016 Group Name: Software Services Mainframe IMS Affected Locations: All North American SMCs
Summary: Currently, most HP locations are running IMS V12.1. This user communication provides planning information for sites in preparation for the IMS V13.1 upgrade. IMS V13 was made generally available as of October 25, 2013. Actual upgrade dates will be determined with each account using normal change management processes. Upgrades will be performed in an account’s test IMS subsystem prior to production to allow for application testing. IMS V12 end of support date is November 7, 2016. IMS subproducts will be upgraded prior to IMS V13 upgrade
Justification: IMS V13.1 will allow HP to maintain the current level of technology.
This upgrade offers features such as:
IMS Database Manager enhancements: The IMS™ Version 13 Database Manager includes enhancements to DBRC and new support for database versioning and dynamic database restructuring. • Database versioning provides the ability to assign user-defined version identifiers to different versions of the structure of a database. These identifiers enable you to make structural changes to a database while providing multiple views of physical data to a variety of applications. • DBRC enhancements include changes to the RECON data set, changes that support the DEDB alter and HALDB alter functions, and changes to the DELETE LOG command. • IMS Version 13 allows you to alter the physical attributes of a data entry database (DEDB) area or change the DEDB randomizer while the DEDB area remains online. • IMS Version 13 extends support for extended address volumes (EAV) to GSAM database data sets. • You can use type-2 commands to make structural changes to a HALDB while the HALDB remains online. • Under certain conditions, the results of the /START DB command are changed from what they were in prior releases of IMS.
IMS Transaction Manager enhancements: The IMS™ Version 13 Transaction Manager includes enhancements to the following functions: callout, Intersystem Communication (ISC), and Open Transaction Manager Access (OTMA). • The destination descriptor for IMS asynchronous callout requests is expanded to include a new type: MQSERIES. • The DL/I ICAL call can be used to send a request to another IMS application and receive the response in the same unit of work for the original application. • The Java™ dependent region resource adapter includes a Java Message Service (JMS) interface that can be used by Java applications for the same functionality in Java dependent regions. • The Intersystem Communication (ISC) function supports TCP/IP connections between IMS and IBM® CICS® Transaction Server for z/OS®. The TCP/IP support for ISC is provided in IMS by IMS Connect. • The maximum numbers of both logical and physical links that you can define is increased. • OTMA enhancements include a new destination descriptor type, the ability to notify OTMA clients earlier about an impending IMS termination, and more control over OTMA exit routines.
Benefits to Users: This information is being communicated to ensure planning occurs and all prerequisites are addressed for a smooth and timely transition. IMS Capabilities will test this upgrade on a 'sandbox' system first to verify the installation and to make sure the IMS system starts and is operational. The upgrade will then be applied to the development regions where accounts should verify their applications are still functioning properly. After the application teams complete their testing, the software will be installed in production. The accounts should then verify their applications are still functioning properly in the production environment.
Details: • Support for the SECURITY macro is discontinued in IMS™ Version 13 • No longer need to specify the TRANEXIT and SIGNEXIT keywords to use the Transaction Authorization exit routine (DFSCTRN0) and the Signon/off Security exit routine (DFSCSNG0). Instead, IMS automatically detects and loads the exit routines when they are linked in one of the STEPLIB or LINKLIST libraries. • IMS Version 13 is the last release to support the IMS Classic Java™ APIs. Customers that are using these APIs should migrate to the IMS Universal drivers. • IMS Version 13 is the last version of IMS to support the IMS Connect SSL function. Customers using this function should migrate to using IBM® z/OS® Communications Server Application Transparent Transport Layer Security (AT-TLS) to set up Secure Socket Layer (SSL) on TCP/IP connections to IMS Connect. • Support for the IMS Control Center is discontinued. To explore, query, start, and stop IMS resources from a browser interface in a distributed environment, use the IMS Explorer for Administration, which is available as an extension of the IBM Tools Base Administration Console for z/OS component of the IBM Tools Base for z/OS, V1.4 (5655-V93). • IMS Enterprise Suite Version 2.1 is the last release of IMS Enterprise Suite that will include the DLIModel utility plug-in. Customers using the IMS Enterprise Suite DLIModel utility plug-in should migrate to using the IMS Enterprise Suite Explorer for Development instead. Although IMS Explorer for Development includes enhancements to most IMS Enterprise Suite DLIModel utility plug-in functions, it does not provide support for IMS database web services or IMS XML DB. • IMS Version 13 is the last release to support IMS MFS Web Enablement. Support for MFS Web Enablement in IMS 13 extends only to current users of the function. • An application ACB gen is required to be staged for the implementation by the account DBA. • V13.1 SVCs need to be implemented prior to or with this upgrade. • A COLD start will be performed during the upgrade. • Upgrade will be performed for all IMS in Data Sharing or IMPLEX environments at the same time. • Accounts are responsible for verifying any account owned and maintained software is compatible with IMS V13.1. • HP supported sub-products may require maintenance. The sub-product maintenance will be done in advance of the IMS V13.1 upgrade where possible. • IMS 13 is upwardly compatible from previous versions, allowing existing applications and data to be used without change. Migration and coexistence support is provided for IMS V12.
